Musana VBS - Thursday Post

Today was a day full of adventure. The day started with a wonderful breakfast made by our sweet cook Sarah. The first of our adventure started with a bus ride to the farm in Bukona. The head of the farm project was John and he gave us a tour of the entire area. We saw everything from cows, to calves, turkeys, goats, chickens, piglets, elephant grass, banana trees, and so much more. I even had the privilege of naming one of the cows “Bessie.” John and another one of the men running the farming projects talked with us about the future of the farm and what that will look like as well.

After having some fun at the Musana farming project we were able to go to one of the Women’s projects in Bukona. We introduced ourselves to all the women and even had a little dance party. It started with all the women dancing and singing and then they would wrap a scarf around someone’s waist and pull them into the dancing circle. This continued until everyone was smiling, dancing, singing, and having a great time. Then Dennis, the Project Director, was able to translate for us and tell us all about the sewing that the women do to sell their scarves, dresses, and more. All the people in the village were so welcoming and inviting. The man that owned the house where our discussion was held told us we were “most welcome” and that “we should take pictures of him by his house.” What a great experience.

After a long day of “go, go, go,” we were all pretty exhausted, but it was day four of Musana VBS and there was no time to lose. We quickly filled our bellies with another full and delicious meal and were ready to love on all those kiddos yelling “auntie auntie” or “uncle uncle.” The second we got through the gate of the school they came running like the first day of VBS. It was full of dancing, singing, playing fun games, and of course making some super colorful friendship bracelets. One of the older boys even taught me how to make one kind of friendship bracelet after he got over the surprise that I did not know how to make such a simple bracelet.

Sometimes you feel like you must just blend in with the huge mob of children and leaders, but somehow the same kids run up to you every single day remembering your name, laughing with you, and hanging on your arms as you walk from station to station. The look on their faces when you remember their names is priceless, so most of us have been trying our best to match every face to a name so that each kid feels special.

Everyday here is so unique and a wonderful learning experience for me and everyone else on the team. If we are not learning about what Musana stands for, we are learning how to show love, how to teach, how to bond, and how to be a community. God is working in all of our hearts in different ways through our morning Bible Study sessions and just the little conversations we have with each other. It is a great to see an organization that is so excited about Jesus.
