Day Five Part - Returning to Where It All Starts

We left the IDP camp hoping and praying that their need for emergency aid will indeed be temporary and the joy on the faces of the children will spread to the rest of their families and stay for a long time.

Our next stop was KS1, the Kabul School for Street Kids grades 1-3. We arrived just in time to help serve the kids from the morning session their hot lunch made up of a full plate of rice, some green vegetables, a big serving of naan, and a bottle of water.

It’s amazing to see the transformation of the children. A month ago the first graders were rummaging through trash piles on the streets for anything they could sell, wear, or eat and now they are well behaved kids, in clean school uniforms, eating quietly before heading into their classroom where they will learn the three R’s and meaningful life skills from good hygiene to honesty and discipline. Seeing this school grow from 29 children when it opened in 2009 to more than 750 today fills our hearts with hope.

We then headed back to the guest house for a late lunch and some restoration time after an emotionally tough morning. In the late afternoon we took a drive to Maranjan Hill and the tomb where the last king of Afghanistan, Mohammad Zahir Shah, was laid to rest in 2007. It’s one of the most revered locations in all of Afghanistan… and another sweet excuse to hang out with our brothers on the staff.

Thank you for your notes of encouragement and for continuing to support and pray for us. It means more than you’ll ever know.

Many blessings… Bob
