Musana VBS - Blog 1 Part 1

WE HAVE ARRIVED!!! Our team is beyond blessed to have arrived in one piece with all of our luggage. Yes, that’s right, all of our luggage made it to Entebbe. We flew from Denver to Minneapolis to Amsterdam to Kigali, Rwanda and finally landed in Entebbe, Uganda. After 32+ hours of travel we were all thrilled to be on solid ground and that much closer to seeing all those sweet faces at Musana.
Muza met us at the airport and helped us load all of our stuff into the bus. Yes, all 22 duffle bags full of about a thousand t-shirts, 17 suitcases full of mostly bug spray, 17 backpacks with cliff bars and beef jerky, a handful of other things, and two boxes with decorations. Oh, and don’t forget the cheese from Amsterdam! We drove a short distance to the Lake Victoria Guest House to get a nights rest before the 4ish hour drive to Musana Nursery and Primary School.
The next morning we started the final leg of our journey. We made the infamous chicken-on-a-stick pit stop and enjoyed some chicken, chapatti, rolex, and Stoney’s from a road side vendor. This is a priceless experience.
Arriving at Musana Nursery and Primary School is always a special and unique experience! As the bus pulled up to the gates you could hear the screams from the children. They ran out of the dining hall and along the fence to greet us. We unpacked, settled in and had a wonderful meal prepared by the amazing Dorcas, the guest house hospitality matron.
At 4pm, the staff at Musana had prepared an opening to receive our team. They welcomed us by singing and dancing. We spent the rest of the afternoon getting to know the campus and children. Sound of joy rang throughout the campus as the children taught us songs, words in Lusoga, and played games with endless laughter. It didn’t matter how tired we were from traveling; we were all wide awake with full hearts.
Saturday morning we had our first team Bible Study and then met with our station leaders after getting to know one another. We finalized any planning for VBS and got to know each other. It was absolutely incredible how well planned out the Ugandan staff was!! They have done such a wonderful job getting ready for this year’s VBS. We had the pleasure of going to Musana Vocational Secondary School to see the Music, Drama, and Dance (MDD) performances. There were powerful poems and sits bringing light to the reality of secondary education in Uganda. There were some incredible dances as well. Our own, Eric Johnson was called upon to challenge one of the dancers and provided quite the impromptu solo! We all thought maybe he knew ahead of time and prepared for his dance debut, but nope! It was all Eric! We enjoyed lunch at Sol View before heading back to spend some more time with our station leaders. We ended the night joining the children for movie night and watched The Sandlot. What a successful day!
